Activity 1.2: Metaphor for Learning

     Learning is a journey.  Students must prepare for learning by focusing their attention and getting organized, just as one might prepare for a trip by packing and mapping out a route.  The destination to any given concept can be a tough one.   The journey can be long, the road rocky; the learner could get lost, mired down by technicalities or the darkness of resistance.  Students can be led off the path to learning by peers, Facebook, or that bird flying around outside the window.  Teachers should be the voice inside the GPS.  Students may not always listen to the voice, and it may sometimes lead them astray in the form ineffective teaching strategies.  Effective teachers, however, will guide students through roadblocks, help them find their way when they are lost, and ultimately lead them to their destinations.  And, just as reaching the beach is satisfying to vacationers, reaching understanding is satisfying to students.  We are lifelong travelers on the journey of learning.

    I loved how you compared the role of a teacher to the voice inside of a GPS. I believe that we cannot force a student to learn. It is up to us to utilize what we know to lead and motivate students!

  2. Learning is a journey- love that! I feel that many times, teachers over look the process of learning that is going on because they are too focused on the end result. Our journey to the destination is where we learn the most. As teachers, it is important for us to remember the process is as, if not more, Important than the outcome.

  3. I was going to use this one Chelsea! Great choice! Learning definitely is a journey, and for some there are more roadblocks and mountains to climb compared to others. Also, unfortunately some GPS's are better than others and this can also be thought of in regards to educators. Some know down to the minute details the "route" for each individual student while others, like Leah mentioned, may only be focused on the end result or the destination (i.e. test scores).
